How to fix your posture while sitting
I love the idea behind the “posture fixing” devices on the market now. We have already established that “sitting is the new smoking”, so anything that you can do to improve the position your body is in seems like a great concept. I would love it more if you’d grab a sit-to-stand desk and spend more time standing than sitting, but if you do have to sit, how do you fix it?
The answer is really very simple: Don’t try to simply pull your shoulders back, or wear things that force JUST your shoulders back. Shoulders only cooperate as long as they have a nice level and stable hip base to work with.
What are your hips up to? (Does this sound familiar?) This is where you want to focus your attention.
For instance: Are you slumping into the letter “C” if someone looked at you from the side?
Consider this: If you only pulled your shoulders back from the letter “C” you would make a backwards “J”. That’s not comfortable!
You need to address the whole letter “C”, not just the top part. Don’t just pull their shoulders back….instead, roll those hips forward, and then your shoulders can actually relax and roll back on their own. Now you have made a gentle “S”, and your posture magically improves. In two seconds or less!!!
Be patient though…if you are used to slumping, then the gentle “S” will feel like work. This will get better over time, and eventually slumping into the letter “C” will hurt your back. (Maybe it already does?) At any rate, it is such an incredibly simple thing to fix.
